Adate

Adate

Goddess of lies, illusions, intrigue, and necessary deceit, feared as both poison and balance.

Overview

Adate is the goddess of lies, illusions, intrigue, and deceit. Many condemn her as malign, yet theologians argue that Beral created her as a counterweight against dangerous extremes of truth, certainty, and righteousness.

Divine Role

Adate embodies manipulation, disguise, seduction, secrecy, and the power of falsehood to alter reality. She is feared because her influence reaches courts, temples, markets, lovers, spies, and rebels. She is respected because some truths destroy what a careful lie can preserve.

Her cult attracts the ambitious, the hunted, the politically trapped, and those who believe conventional virtue has failed them.

Cult and Rites

Adate's followers work in secrecy. Their rituals are hidden from public judgment and often involve illusion, mind-clouding rites, extracted secrets, offerings, and sacrifices made to purchase influence or concealment.

The faithful believe lies are tools, not accidents. A lie may be a weapon, veil, mercy, trap, or prayer, depending on who speaks it and what price they pay.

Campaign Use

  • Use Adate to complicate simple truth-versus-lie morality.
  • Let her worshipers solve real problems by unacceptable means.
  • Pair Adate with Honos when oaths, trials, testimony, or sacred law become dangerous.
